Quick Answer

Short Answer: About 2,000–2,500 Steps

For most adults a mile works out to roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps, around 2,250–2,300 for an average-height adult (170 cm). The exact number is set almost entirely by your height: a taller walker covers more ground with each step, so they need fewer steps to finish a mile, while a shorter walker needs more. A person of 200 cm takes around 1,944 steps a mile, where someone of 150 cm takes about 2,592 — a difference of more than 600 steps over the same distance. Enter your height above for your own figure, in both miles and kilometres.

How Steps-Per-Mile Is Calculated

The arithmetic is simpler than it sounds, and it rests on one well-studied relationship: the length of an average step is close to 0.414 times a person’s height. So a walker who is 1.70 metres tall has a step length of about 0.70 metres, and one who is 1.90 metres tall steps around 0.79 metres. That single factor is all you need, because the rest is just division.

A mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres. To find the steps in a mile, you divide that distance by your step length: 1,609.344 ÷ 0.70 metres gives roughly 2,287 steps for the 1.70 metre walker, and 1,609.344 ÷ 0.79 metres gives about 2,046 for the taller one. A kilometre uses the same method with 1,000 metres on top instead, which is why the calculator returns both numbers at once. Because everything flows from step length, and step length flows from height, your height is the only input that moves the answer — pace and weight are carried over only for the calorie tools further down the page.

Steps Per Mile by Height

The table below lists the steps in a mile across a range of common heights, using the 0.414 step-length factor. Use it as a quick reference; the calculator above resolves the figure to your exact height and also gives your steps per kilometre and your step length.

HeightSteps per mile
150 cm (4‑9″)~2,592
160 cm (5‑3″)~2,430
170 cm (5‑7″)~2,287
180 cm (5’11″)~2,160
190 cm (6‑3″)~2,046
200 cm (6‑7″)~1,944

Based on step length ≈ 0.414 × height. Your own stride may differ slightly from the average.

Turning Miles Into Calories

Knowing your steps per mile is the bridge to the rest of your walking numbers. Once you know how far a given step count carries you, you can work out the distance of a daily target or convert a route’s mileage straight into steps with the Steps to Miles Calculator. From there, distance turns into energy: the further you walk and the more you weigh, the more you burn, which is what the Calories Burned Calculator works out across walking and other activities. For a walking routine built around a daily step goal, the Daily Steps Calculator ties it together. These tools all share the same step-length geometry as this page, so their numbers line up with the steps-per-mile figure you see above.

The step length ≈ 0.414 × height relationship follows Grieve & Gear (1966). An unusually long or short stride, or a brisk pace, will shift your real-world steps per mile a little.
