The Male Navy Method
For men, the U.S. Navy method estimates body fat from just neck, waist and height — no hip measurement. As a worked example, a man of 178 cm with a 38 cm neck and a 90 cm waist lands at about 20.1% body fat. The calculator above is pre-set to the male method, so only the two measurements are asked for.
Two Measurements Plus Height
The male circumference equation reads the gap between your waist and neck and scales it against your height. Because most of the change in a man’s body fat shows up around the midsection, those two sites carry the signal, and no hip measurement is needed. That makes the men’s version the quickest of all — a tape, your neck, your waist, and the height you already know.
Measuring Neck and Waist
Measure your neck just below the larynx, letting the tape slope slightly down toward the front. Measure your waist horizontally at the level of the navel, breathing out normally — don’t suck in. Keep the tape level and snug without denting the skin, and average two or three reads. The waist reading is the one that moves most as your body composition changes, so take it carefully and the same way each time.
Fat/Lean Split and Fitness Bands
Add your weight and the tool splits it into fat mass and lean mass — for an 80 kg man at 20.1%, about 16.1 kg of fat and 63.9 kg of lean mass. It also places your figure against the American Council on Exercise (ACE) reference bands for men, shown for context only rather than as a target.
