Turning a Percentage Into Pounds
Fat mass is your weight multiplied by your body-fat percentage. A 180 lb person at 20% body fat carries 36 lb of fat and 144 lb of lean mass (180 × 0.20 = 36; 180 − 36 = 144). Percent vs Pounds
A body-fat percentage tells you the proportion of your weight that is fat; fat mass tells you the actual amount. The conversion is one multiplication: fat mass = weight × (body-fat % ÷ 100). Work through the example — 180 lb at 20% is 180 × 0.20 = 36 lb of fat. Everything else, 144 lb, is lean mass. Switch the same body to 25% and the fat mass rises to 45 lb while lean mass falls to 135 lb, even though the scale still reads 180. That is why two people at the same weight can have very different compositions.
Fat Mass vs Lean Mass
Your weight is the sum of two parts: fat mass and lean mass. Fat mass is the weight of stored body fat. Lean mass is everything else — muscle, bone, connective tissue, organs and body water. They always add up to your total weight, so if the calculator gives you 36 lb of fat on a 180 lb frame, the remaining 144 lb is lean by definition. Tracking both, rather than the scale alone, tells you whether a change in weight came from fat or from lean tissue.
Why Pounds Matter More Than Percent When Losing Weight
When you lose weight, your body-fat percentage and your fat mass can move at different speeds. Losing 10 lb of pure fat drops the fat mass directly, but the percentage only shifts as far as your new total weight allows.
