Quick Answer

Is BMI Different for Men?

No — BMI uses one formula for everyone. Weight ÷ height², read against the same 18.5–24.9 healthy band, for men and women alike. A man of 68 kg at 168 cm gets a BMI of 24.1 — the same as a woman of that size. The catch for men is muscle: because BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, a well-built frame can read “overweight” while carrying little fat.

One Formula, Same Thresholds

There is no men’s BMI equation. The formula uses only weight and height, with no sex term, so the calculator above gives a man the same BMI it would give a woman of identical height and weight. The category boundaries are shared as well — normal from 18.5 to 24.9, overweight from 25, obese from 30. The tool’s only threshold adjustments are the WHO 2004 Asian ranges and the senior ranges for ages 65 and over, and both apply to men and women alike.

The Muscle Blind Spot

Muscle is about 18% denser than fat, so it weighs more for the same volume. A man who trains hard can therefore carry enough lean tissue to push his BMI into the overweight band — 25 to 30 — or beyond, even at a lean body fat level. BMI has no way to see this; it only divides total weight by height squared. That is the single biggest reason a fit, muscular man should not read his BMI as a body-fat verdict. To separate lean from fat, the Body Fat Percentage Calculator uses the US Navy tape method, and the Lean Body Mass Calculator estimates how much of your weight is lean tissue. For Asian and senior thresholds, use the parent BMI Calculator.

BMI is a screening figure, not a measure of body fat. Boys and teens under 20 are assessed on age-specific percentiles instead.
