Quick Answer
The BMI Chart at a Glance
A BMI chart maps your height and weight onto a category: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. The tables below give the category thresholds and the healthy weight range for common heights — or enter your own numbers in the calculator above to land your exact figure on the chart.
BMI Category Chart
| Category | BMI range |
|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Normal weight | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 |
| Class I Obesity | 30.0 – 34.9 |
| Class II Obesity | 35.0 – 39.9 |
| Class III Obesity | 40.0 and above |
Adults of Asian descent read overweight from 23.0 and obesity from 27.5 (WHO 2004); adults 65+ use a slightly higher healthy band of 23–28. The parent calculator applies both automatically.

Each healthy range is simply the weight that produces a BMI of 18.5 at the low end and 24.9 at the high end for that height — because BMI is weight ÷ height², the range widens as you get taller. To find where your own weight sits, enter it with your exact height in the calculator above. To turn a target weight into a plan, the Ideal Weight Calculator gives a formula-based target and the Weight Loss Calculator converts it into a daily calorie figure. For your full category with Asian and senior ranges, use the parent BMI Calculator.
Ranges are rounded to the nearest kilogram and pound. BMI is a screening chart, not a measure of body fat — very muscular builds can read high.
