Quick Answer
BMI in Pounds and Inches
In imperial units, BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². Convert your height to total inches first — 5 ft 7 is 67 inches. For 150 lb at 67 in: 703 × 150 = 105,450, then 67² = 4,489, and 105,450 ÷ 4,489 = 23.5, a normal-range result. The calculator above is already set to imperial, so just enter pounds and feet-and-inches.
Working It Out in Pounds and Inches
Start by turning your height into total inches: multiply the feet by 12 and add the remaining inches, so 5 ft 10 becomes 70 inches. Then multiply your weight in pounds by 703, and divide by the height in inches squared. A person of 200 lb at 70 inches computes as 703 × 200 = 140,600, then 70² = 4,900, and 140,600 ÷ 4,900 = 28.7 — inside the overweight band (25 to 30). The 703 constant is the only thing that separates this from the metric version; both land on the same number.
Reading Your Imperial Result
After you calculate, the result card gives your BMI, your category and the healthy weight range in pounds for your height — the span that keeps you between BMI 18.5 and 24.9. To plan a change from there, the Weight Loss Calculator converts a goal weight into a daily calorie target, and the TDEE Calculator estimates how many calories you burn each day. For metric units, Asian thresholds and senior ranges, use the parent BMI Calculator.
BMI is a screening figure, not a measure of body fat. Very muscular builds can read high, and children and teens are assessed on age-specific percentiles instead.
